Discover Dry Needling

What is Dry Needling? In layman’s terms, please!

Dry needling is an intervention utilized by physical therapists where a thin needle penetrates the skin to stimulate underlying muscle and connective tissue.

How does dry needling work?

No one knows exactly why dry needling works but there are a few guiding theories. At the local level, dry needling induces a mini, therapeutic inflammatory reaction which helps to increase blood flow and creates changes in biochemicals that help to restore mechanisms of self-healing. Dry needling stimulates many systems in the body including, but not limited to, the immune, cardiovascular, lymphatic, and perhaps most importantly, the nervous system. Therefore, it can be considered a systemic treatment that results in systemic effects such as relaxation.

Does it hurt?

Everyone’s nervous system is different so the sensation from getting needled can range from “it hurts,” to “I didn’t even feel it,” to everything in between. The physical therapist will do everything they can to minimize discomfort including using a smaller needle or using less needles.

Who is Dry Needling Appropriate for?

Dry needling can benefit you if you are experiencing pain, muscle tightness, swelling, and/or decreased range of motion. To truly determine if you are appropriate for this intervention, you should schedule an appointment with one of our physical therapists. If you are pregnant, on heavy amounts of anti-coagulants, just had surgery, have open wounds and/or fear needles, the physical therapist will likely NOT recommend dry needling as an intervention.
